Shearer mentioned as the bait was he Graeme. Well yes it could dish it out when need be, used to take a lot as well. But if was as bad as any then you haven't seen a lot of football. Tommy Smith of Liverpool was about the dirtiest I can remember followed closely by Hunter, Bremner, and Charlton of Leeds and Harris of Chelsea. Maybe a bit before your time but made Shearer look like a pussy cat. Regarding what people do outside of work, nobody is bothered how a roofer or a welder, etc behaves, they are hardly a role model for kids are they. I once had a problem with a guy who worked for me. It reached my ears that he tried to entice a nine year boy into his car. He freely admitted to it saying he thought the boy was lost and was only going to deliver him safely home. This occured in his own time. I sacked him on the spot. Wrong in your book was I.? Greed...........Rio Ferdinand........ba nned for 8 months for not turning up for a drug test. 8 months paid in full, but never doing a days work for his club yet the week the ban finished he demanded and got a big pay rise. Contriversal you love to be but a bit silly this time mate.

nope john wasnt baiting you, to me it doesnt matter who the footballer is, if its violent play then its wrong.
we are all role models in our own way though john, you where a role model to your children and people around you (and to me also), and i suppose i can be a role model also, to apprentices, younger familly etc.
if you sacked someone for that now john you would lose a lot of money. tribunals would not find in your favour on that one.
rio ferdinand was not just after a wage rise when he came back from that ban, his contract was up for re-negotiation, if that had not been resolved then he would have been able to walk away from the club/talk to interested parties very soon after. as for him not doing a days work in 8 months, hmmm your stretching it there, he trained with the club, and fullfilled all other obligations for the club, the only thing he didnt actually do was play a match.

Didn't ask you about losing a lot of money in a tribunal Graeme, I asked if I was wrong in your book for sacking him.

Compo...I wouldve sacked the person you employed too. Without hesitation.
And,it must be agree with Compo day today cos I'm with both you and Kryton.
How come Rugby is a tougher sport that involves a load of tackling and god knows what else. Yet we never hear of thuggish Rugby players or rugby fans throwing bottles at or knifing the opposition.

There will be some violence in all sports on account of people being people, but to my knowledge no one in rugby (fan or player) has stabbed anyone: -March 16th 2006 Thirteen Middlesbrough fans were taken to hospital, some with stab wounds, after a masked gang of Rome's infamous "ultras" hyper-violent football hooligans attacked them in the run-up to last night's Uefa Cup tie. And : - Feb 22nd 2007 West Brom's Ronnie Wallwork has played in his first competitive game since suffering multiple stab wounds in a Manchester club three months ago. And:- 19th june 2008 A TEENAGER stabbed with his school pal by a gang in the street has this week spoken out against knife crime in London's East End.
The pair were ambushed on their way to shops in Whitechapel's Brady Street after playing football in the park by a gang of masked thugs who pulled up in two cars.
The 17-year-old was in hospital three days with several stab wounds to his legs and shoulder and had tissue damage to his fingers. He also suffered hammer blows to his head and arm.
The youngster returned to his family's home in Bethnal Green this week, still nursing his wounds (pictured). The family have asked not to be identified.
He told the East London Advertiser: "We don't carry knives. We've got no time for it. We just like to play football."
He was knocked to the ground with a hammer and stabbed several times while his 18-year-old brother was also hit with a hammer and injured when he grabbed a knife in the struggle. Yep, you can google up an argument anytime

Bit of contradiction here Graeme, you say Barton should not be punished for what happened outside of work yet then say we are all role models in our own way. If you are a role model it has to be 24/7. You also say our footballers are earning peanuts............ well 80 - 100 grand a week is not peanuts in anyones book. Wonder how much the Russians, croitians, earn compared with our lot who are worth their money ..............overp aid, overated, couldn't even qualify for Euro 2008. Go on ......blame the manager.

where did i say that, i said he has already been punished. i never said footballers are earning peanuts, i said they are earning peanuts compared to other sports, at least quote me in context. and i didnt bring up violence in rugby, roxmar did, she said you never hear of violence in rugby, which is actually incorrect, as my links show. as for hillsborough, the deaths there where of a result of overcrowding, due to police opening the gates to allow non ticket holding fans into a full area. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillsborough_Disaster

[/color] My thoughts exactly Graeme. What happened at Hillsborough was a tragic accident due to overcrowding that should NEVER have happened. I can't see what this has to do with football violence. It is an insult to all who died and their families

no football hooliganism should ever be condoned, the heysel stadium was disgraceful, its just a shame that it got ALL english clubs banned. what i am saying though is there is violence in all sports, to say one is ok is wrong. there is no place in sports for violence. joey barton is serving his prison sentance, when he comes out i really dont care what happens to him, he has already been fined 2 weeks wages by newcastle. its not for newcastle united to punish him again though. your average person on the street will never have to pay a fine like joey barton has. if newcastle where gonna sack him, then i feel it should already have been done, the minute he was sentanced.
